Looking Back
Fading at the Water Gap.
On this November morning, many of the fields in our rural part of the state contain rows of corn stubble or the ragged remains of hay that has been harvested by this time of year.
Memories can be found behind every boulder and around each bend. There is much to do; bundle up and enjoy!

Branchburg Veterans Memorial
There are somewhere around 1,200
historical markers
in New Jersey, 500 of them in the Northwest Skylands region. Many are monuments to war veterans from all eras and in all sizes. The Branchburg Veterans Memorial
covers six wars at once: the American Revolution, Civil War, Word Wars I and II, the Korean War and Vietnam, all with art depicting each conflict, surround a small court and a central monument honoring the men and women of Branchburg who proudly served.
Monuments like these decorate Northwest New Jersey in prominent and tucked away places. They are statues and plaques, fine-crafted or natural rock, some are pedestaled and others are so discreet as to appear part of the natural landscape. They all commemorate a part of our history, and often remind us of courageous men and women who have served our country. Remember them today, Veterans Day. More...
At Rockaway Presbyterian Church this monument was erected in 1892 commemorating the service of Rockaway Township soldiers and sailors in the Civil War. Seek out their stories of triumph and tragedy.
58,000 New Jersey men served in the Civil War. With reenlistments, the state would eventually receive credit for more than 80,000 terms of service.
160 years after the secession of Confederate states, the men and women of the war years still receive vivid tribute in reenactments, living history demonstrations, and round tables.
This Sunday, Nov. 14, the 27th NJ Volunteer Infantry visits Shippen Manor for their "winter camp." Civil War winters were particularly difficult for the armies, which struggled with impassable muddy roads and harsh weather. Disease was rampant amongst the armies, killing more men than the battles. Even with the hardships of winter, the soldiers also had an opportunity to bond, have fun, and enjoy their more permanent camps. 1 - 4pm. 8 Belvidere Ave., Oxford.
Million Dollar Highway

Lost history of the Delaware Water Gap area comes to light along a short drive along the Delaware River north of Portland, PA. A few stops along the way to get out and walk a bit reveal some of the area's old resort sites, all now gone. Of the lost resorts, the largest and most lavish were on the Pennsylvania side of the river.
Rock LegendsBevans Rock House is a large rockshelter formed by a huge overhanging rock slab and was probably used by Indians for many years.
New Jersey’s Skylands offer beauty, awe, history, and mystery to any weekend traveler discovering the region’s mountains, lakes, fields, forests—and rocks!! Nearly everywhere you look there are rocks; big ones, little ones, sometimes fields of them resembling a Golem’s garden. But amidst this lithic profusion curious explorers cannot help but wonder why certain rocks and boulders have drawn enough attention in days gone by to have been given names of their own. Where are these special boulders anyhow, and what are their stories?

All Along the Byway
The Millstone Valley Scenic Byway is a narrow 23-mile roadway loop paralleling the western side of the Millstone River and the eastern side of the Delaware & Raritan Canal between the villages of Millstone and Kingston. Found within the Byway are eight Historic Districts containing buildings of historic and architectural importance; a twelve-mile section of the Delaware & Raritan Canal State Park that offers preserved vintage dwellings, albeit mostly private; an intact section of the D&R Canal with its locks and towpath; vintage bridges; and roadways over which Revolutionary War troops marched nearly 240 years ago. Outdoor enthusiasts can fish, hike, bike, jog, horse-back ride, canoe or kayak and bird-watch at various locations.
