June 28 - July 4

Bonfires and Illuminations!

Declare your right to a summer fit for royalty! What better place to pursue happiness than Northwest New Jersey? Firecrackers, fairs, picnics and independence! The Fourth of July, as John Adams put it, "ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more." Heed our forefather! There's plenty of action to choose from.

Human Events

Celebrate Independence Day with the Morris County Tourism Bureau and Morristown National Historical Park at Revolutionary Times, a day of patriotic heritage dedicated to raising awareness of the role that Morris County played in the Revolutionary War. On Wednesday, July 4, the traditional reading of the Declaration of Independence will occur on the Green in Morristown at noon, followed by music, a musket salute and free tours of the Presbyterian Church's sanctuary and graveyard. There also will be tours of the Whippany Burying Yard and a hike to a Revolutionary War Powder Mill starting at Acorn Hall. For more information, click or call 973/631-5151.

Long-time followers of New Jersey "illuminations" will tell you that the fireworks at the Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club are hard to beat (Friday, June 29), especially if you've got a view from a boat.

Blairstown loves its Fourth, a long-established day of celebration with family and community: games, contests, music, a footbridge walking tour, and fireworks!
