August 17 - 24

Dog Day Afternoons

Smarter than the average dog, this German shepherd wears RuffWear Grip Trex boots that protect his feet while strolling along hot Morristown sidewalks, training for a career with The Seeing Eye.

The sultry days of mid to late summer are long and lazy. Busy, demanding days are not far ahead; so spend some quality time finding out the best ways to do nothing but relax. You don't have to rob a bank to have fun!

Viva la Vintage!

150 dealers in the buildings, pavilions and grounds of the scenic Warren County Fairgrounds await your arrival at the twelfth annual Warren County Antiques Show & Vintage Marketplace. You’ll find furniture, jewelry, antique toys, tools, posters, quilts, porcelain, glassware, primitives… with antiques, collectibles and vintage items of all kinds. And there's plenty of food; even a fresh produce farmstand! The Fairgrounds are located on Route 519 in Harmony, three miles north of Phillipsburg, NJ. 908-343-5873 or email for answers to any immediate questions.

Rock and Stroll

Stroll or kayak the Morris Canal at Canal Day Festival in Wharton.
The Morris Canal was always a good place for a stroll. The canal's 102-mile meander across northern New Jersey, from Phillipsburg to Jersey City, was walked by every mule driver for every team that pulled a canal boat from 1831 to 1924. You can still walk a portion of the canal at the newly restored Morris Canal Lock Two East in Wharton. And you can do a lot more at Canal Day Music and Craft Festival this Saturday (Aug. 19), an old time country fair that celebrates the Morris Canal and its contributions to the development of the communities along its banks. Take a free kayak or narrated boat ride on the canal. Or enjoy a fine crafts show, or demonstrations by local attractions and historic groups, all while ten great bands perform on two stages. Admission is free, although there is a $5 off street parking charge per carload. 10am - 5pm at Hugh Force Park, 180 West Central Ave. in Wharton. Click or call 973/989-0237.

Stringalongs

Suter Band, The Outcrops and Atlanta Cafe Band. And there's lots to drink and chew. Bikers welcome! Tickets are $15 or $10 in advance. For more information about the Inn, check their website or call 908/459-4884. 319 Hope Johnsonburg Rd. (Rt. 519), Hope.

The Morristown Green turns into something resembling Newport all day Saturday (Aug. 19, 12-10pm) during the Morristown Jazz and Blues Festival. Go hear the likes of Ana Popovic, Vince Giordano & the Nighthawks, Bucky Pizzarelli Quintet, Louis Prima Jr. and the Witnesses, and the Walter Trout Band -- for free!

Darkness, Darkness

You may have heard, it's going to get dark early on Monday afternoon (Aug. 21) when the Great American Solar Eclipse begins to be visible in New Jersey, at about 1:20 pm. As the moon crosses our view of the sun, the air will cool, stars will come out, and streams of light will emerge from the shadow. We'll get about 75 percent coverage, but still quite dramatic. Be sure to take precautions! A couple of places to enhance your viewing experience:

At their observatory at Jenny Jump State Forest, the United Astronomy Clubs of N.J. will hosting a viewing event from 12:30 to 4:30 pm. They'll have advice for those interested in photographing the eclipse.

The Morris Museum Astronomical Society will be hold a free eclipse viewing party, broadcasting NASA's live-stream of the total eclipse. For more information, call 973-971-3706. 6 Normandy Heights Rd, Morristown.

Raritan Valley Community College Planetarium will have telescopes set up for the public. Rt. 28 and Lamington Road., North Branch.
