OctoberFest!

Events all month long in Northwest New Jersey’s Skylands add up to one giant celebration of autumn. Arts, harvests, history – pretty much everything that needs expressing is expressed this month, beginning in a big way this weekend. You'll find more about these events and much more on our calendar for this and coming weekends.

Skylands Uncorked

Brook Hollow Winery, in Knowlton Township, looks out over the vineyard, then beyond to the Delaware Water Gap.
Umpteen million potential wine lovers within an hour’s drive is a natural energizer for a wealth of ideas. And so many have borne fruit. Enjoy the harvest!
There's always something special going on at Brook Hollow Winery, as if spending a lazy afternoon on the porch looking out over the vineyard, with a toasting the Water Gap with one of Paul Ritter's great wines weren't enough! There are still a few tickets available for this Saturday's (Oct. 1) annual Pig Roast, and a schedule of events all month long. For more information, click or call 908/496-8200. 594 State Highway 94, Columbia.
Or enjoy an autumn picnic with music on the lawn at Westfall Winery - a Jersey version of a lazy, sun-stroked afternoon in Tuscany. Easily recognized by lines of white post and rail fence, clipped lawns, bright barns and a low-slung dream house built in 1774, the three hundred acres at Westfall not only create a stunning backdrop, but speak a long and rich agricultural history of which winemaking is the latest chapter. For more information, click or call 973/293-3428. 141 Clove Road, Montague.
For more information about these and other local wineries, visit Vintage North Jersey.

More than 140 characters

Following author presentations, book-lovers converge on historic Vail Mansion for book sales and signings.
On Friday (9/30) and Saturday (10/1) the Morristown Festival of Books brings together acclaimed authors with readers and book lovers, which would hopefully include you! More than thirty best-selling authors will speak and answer questions at each of several convenient locations in town. Friday's keynote (ticketed) speaker, Sebastian Junger, who has spent decades reporting from conflict zones worldwide, will talk about the realities of life in a combat zone, and about what it feels like to come home from the front lines.

Three Hundred Years of Solitude

Now vacant, the Solitude House stands as a testament to our collective history as a new nation, as well as testament to all those who persevered in the face of overwhelming odds to succeed.
The Hunterdon County Borough of High Bridge would on its face appear little different than any of the other many municipalities in New Jersey. However, the sign, “Settled in 1700”, which welcomes those who pass through this sleepy little town, implies a long abiding heritage: a story of the longest continually operating iron and steel company in United States and the workers who helped shape our country's history and destiny. Read about the Union Forge and walk the Taylor Steelworkers Historic Greenway...

Eyes Wide Open

A bobcat prowls the wilds at Crystal Springs. (Phone pict sent by Cathy Weeks.)
Should you traverse any stretch of woods, or even your backyard, alert eyes are usually rewarded. Coyotes have become commonplace, and more and more people are reporting bobcats in their presence! Check the reports at the end of our story and you'll see how widespread they've become, thanks to persistent conservation efforts. Or, to follow the Wiley One, click here. And watch out below for turtles!

Explore the Wonders!

Keep Warren County front and center on your radar for exploration this fall. Have a glass of fresh apple cider, or sample the work of a local winery. Drive down a country road and drink in the scenery, or take a hike to enjoy the fall foliage. Shop for antiques or country crafts. For a complete list of pick-your-own farms and other fall fun, click or call 1-800-554-8540.
