Dog Day Afternoons
The sultry days of mid to late summer are long and lazy. Busy, demanding days are not far ahead; so spend some quality time finding out the best ways to do nothing but relax. You don't have to rob a bank to have fun!
Boatmen
For many, the fascinating story of Waterloo Village is one that most completely identifies the heritage of northern New Jersey. Previously the site of a pig iron forge and refinery, Waterloo was approximately half-way along the Morris Canal's 102-mile journey across the state, from Phillipsburg to Jersey City, and had all the components necessary to become a thriving canal town. The canal's meander was walked by every mule driver for every team that pulled a canal boat from 1831 to 1924. A number of partners have turned portions of the canal into recreational paths so that you can learn about the canal while spending time along its route. At this Saturday's (August 8) Canal Day at Waterloo Village in Byram Township, the Canal Society of New Jersey
will offer guided tours of the restored canal town, along with a wide range of programming. A narrated canal boat ride, trades demonstrated at the gristmill and blacksmith shops, period music and eight historic structures open for inspection promise revival for this important historic site. The Waterloo Canal Heritage Days are scheduled on designated Saturdays throughout the summer and fall from 10am - 4pm and are free. For more information click or call 973-292-2755.
Harmonic Sense
CSN Songs closes out Centenary Stage Company's Summer Jamfest this Saturday (August 8, 8pm) as the close harmonies of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young are diligently replicated along with memories of those golden decades. The show takes place at Lackland Center, 715 Grand Ave, Hackettstown. Call 908/979-0900 or click for tickets.
More chordal acrobatics are on display on Sunday, August 9 (5:30pm) as the The Cameos and Emil Stucchio & the Classics hold forth at the Somerset County Park Commission's free Doo-Wop and Food Truck Fest at Duke Island Park in Bridgewater. 908/722-1200.
Also on Sunday (5pm), the Bovine Social Club will bring grassy, twangy sounds of the Delaware River valley to the Shippen Manor Stage in Oxford in the latest installment of Warren County Cultural and Heritage Commission's free summer concert series. 908/453-4381.
Whole Lotta Love Capable of accommodating up to 45 guests, Miss Lotta boasts a newly refurbished full dining room and upper deck as well as a full bar and a state-of-the-art audiovisual system.
Sailing from her home port on Nolan’s Point, Miss Lotta is a 57-foot SkipperLiner dinner cruise vessel. She is named for Lotta Crabtree, an actress well-known in the late 1800s who spent her leisure at an elegant house on Lake Hopatcong, then known as the Jewel of the Mountains. Reclaiming that old-time reputation for fine hospitality, Miss Lotta is the largest boat on the lake and available for lunch, dinner and specialty cruises as well as private events during the summer and fall. Make a hot day cool by booking a cruise during any of the upcoming events. On Friday evening (August 7) sample some of the finest craft whiskeys and bourbons in the area while you watch cigars being hand-rolled right in front of you on the Cigar and Whiskey Cruise! Next Saturday (August 15) do some off-shore gambling on Casino Night, while enjoying finely crafted h’ordeuvres and full bar! Bring the kids on August 18 for Pizza and Craft Night. Miss Lotta is only one of several recent developments that are making Nolan's Point a prime destination for a lovely day. Live the Lake!
