Ice, Action, Camera!

The Red Mill at Clinton. (Dan Bacon)
Let's face it. Winter in New Jersey brings on Seasonal Affective Disorder. For too many mornings a metal gray sky bumps against the roofs of the cars crowding the highways. Daylight begins late and when it ends, it doesn't just end early. It ends emphatically. Gray morphs into black with stunning speed. It is enough to make most people long for the light of the tropics, the Day-Glo Sear Your Retinas beauty of a Caribbean beach.
And yet, with a shift in perspective, photographers can fall in love with our short, cold days of winter. More...

Cast Production

Serious fly-fishermen are almost as busy in January as on opening day in April. Winter is for preparation - the tying of flies . Fishing for trout with flies is like solving a puzzle. The current, the fish, the bugs under the surface and in the air all seem indecipherable. But slowly, with much patience, and relying upon an ever-expanding body of experience collected over a series of seasons, the code can sometimes, although by no means always, be broken. Bob Romano, author of Fishing with Faeries and Shadows in the Stream, and another frequent contributor to the Skylands Visitor magazine, will be be at the Anglers Author's Booth at The Fly Fishing Show at the Garden State Convention Center in Somerset, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 23th, 24th and 25th. You can ask him your fly fishing questions, buy a book or just stop by and say hello.
For more hands-on help, Fred S. Burroughs North Jersey Trout Unlimited offers a series of Fly Tying Classes to be held on Tuesday evenings from February 3 - March 17 at Camp Jefferson Recreation Hall, 81 Weldon Road, Jefferson. You'll be done just in time to enter a new world of magical adventure! 917/418-3590

Lego Up!

A LEGO® sculpture by David Haliski
Since they were first manufactured in 1949, somewhere around 600 billion little plastic bricks and their various progeny have been employed in expressing the imaginations of millions of kids around the world. A global LEGO® subculture has evolved, supporting movies, games, competitions, and six themed amusement parks. There is even Lego Art! This winter, you can take a look at more than 25 original works created by LEGO artists at the Morris Museum. Architects, and engineers have created awesome sculptures of famous buildings, favorite snacks, and memorable masterpieces using LEGO brand building bricks. The exhibition also includes a large-scale working LEGO model train. Hands-on stations will invite visitors to design their own minifigure and to “write” their name on the LEGO wall. Kids of all ages are sure to be delighted with this playful display, and there are plenty of hands-on building opportunities for the whole family. Click or call 973-971-3700 for more information and related programs. 6 Normandy Heights Road, Morristown, NJ 07960
