October 10 - 17
Columbus Day!
It’s all about
discovery.
And like Columbus, you must
explore
to discover. No better time than this weekend to pay your road dues, stuffed with good things to do and colorful panoramas for leaf peepers. Sometimes the quickest way to find something new is to jump in the car and Get Lost! Let that big October moon guide you to good times!
Weekend Journey Through The Past!
Docents like these at the Abraham Staats House in South Bound Brook immerse youngsters in history.
This weekend (Oct. 11-12),
twenty-six
historic sites in
Somerset County
open their doors to the public; many with special exhibits and programs planned for the occasion. Visitors may follow a scenic route, with driving directions prepared for each of three sections in the County—northern, central, and southern—or choose the sites that intrigue them most and drive from one to the next at a leisurely pace.
What In The World Is That?, an educational and fun detective investigation activity for kids and the entire family will test your powers of deduction to solve mysteries at each site. Check the
event website
for site descriptions, special programs, and tour maps, for this
FREE
event.

Follow A River!
Following a river's path is not an easy thing, since access is often blocked by private property or obscured by a maze of highways. But each river tells a story of the people who have lived, worked, played, or traveled along or between its banks. And each guarantees a stretch that will astonish and seduce with superb scenery, gentle pathways, and abundant wildlife. Harness your inner Columbus! Grab your GPS, your Canon, maybe hitch your Raleigh or Old Town to the car top, and chart your course!
The
Wallkill River
shares with great rivers like the Nile and the Rhine the peculiarity of NORTHWARD flow through
Sussex County
towards the Hudson in New York. It is the nine mile stretch of wetlands north of Hamburg that has given rise to the
Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge.
The Rockaway River, near Boonton.
The
Rockaway
winds through forty miles of wooded valleys, residential properties and major town centers from
Sparta Mountain
through the Berkshire Valley, Dover, Denville and the spectacular Boonton gorge. It meets the
Whippany River
in the Meadows of Parsippany and continues to the Passaic. The
Black-Lamington
roars through the hemlock groves of
Hacklebarney State Park, heading for its eventual terminus at the Raritan.
The Raritan South Branch
resembles an arm embracing northwest New Jersey as it runs southwest from Budd Lake through communities it has nourished for hundreds of years, valleys dripping with serenity, and wooded vistas perfumed with the fragrance of a mountain stream. The reservoirs at
Spruce Run
and Round Valley near Clinton mark the river's "elbow" as it turns to head southeast to the Piedmont, tranquilized, but no less beautiful as it approaches Raritan Bay.
Flanked by the river valleys of the Musconetcong, and Paulinskill, and bisected by the
Pequest,
Warren County
offers a progression from rugged terrain to the north and west to the gentle farmland of the east and south as these magnificent tributaries flow toward the Delaware.
If you've
somehow missed
floating the Delaware this summer, there's
no better time
than fall to explore the
islands of the Delaware.
