Columbus Day!

It’s all about discovery. And like Columbus, you must explore to discover. No better time than this weekend to pay your road dues, stuffed with good things to do and colorful panoramas for leaf peepers. Sometimes the quickest way to find something new is to jump in the car and Get Lost! Let that big October moon guide you to good times!

Weekend Journey Through The Past!

Docents like these at the Abraham Staats House in South Bound Brook immerse youngsters in history.
This weekend (Oct. 11-12), twenty-six historic sites in Somerset County open their doors to the public; many with special exhibits and programs planned for the occasion. Visitors may follow a scenic route, with driving directions prepared for each of three sections in the County—northern, central, and southern—or choose the sites that intrigue them most and drive from one to the next at a leisurely pace. What In The World Is That?, an educational and fun detective investigation activity for kids and the entire family will test your powers of deduction to solve mysteries at each site. Check the event website for site descriptions, special programs, and tour maps, for this FREE event.

Chop, Chop!

Catch a glimpse of nature’s splendor at beautiful Shawnee Mountain, during prime fall foliage time in the Poconos! This weekend's (Oct. 11-12) Autumn Timber Festival includes lumberjack demonstrations, chainsaw sculptures, live music, children’s activities and food and craft vendors galore. I 80, Exit 309. Shawnee-On-Delaware, PA. 570/421-7231.

Harvestness!

On Saturday (Oct. 11) the Sussex County Harvest, Honey and Garlic Festival will celebrate the agriculture, heritage and outdoor attributes of New Jersey's Great Northwest. The county-wide autumn celebration will include a farmers market and displays and information from environmental, agricultural and heritage organizations and games and activities at the Farm Fun building. The free, family oriented event runs from 10am - 4pm at the Sussex County Fairgrounds, 37 Plains Road in Augusta. Click here for more details.

Or head for fun and food at Chester's Harvest Celebration (Oct. 11): the first Chester Chili Challenge, music, pumpkin and wood carving, antique car show and much more. For perfect picking nearby -- simple, authentic and without the carnival -- you'll find the 250-year-old Riamede Farm, with thirty varieties of traditional, heirloom and modern apples -- and a pumpkin patch. Minutes from Main Street at 122 Oakdale Rd, Chester, 908/879-5353.

And on Sunday, Oct. 12, from 1-4pm (short and sweet), The Riverside Fall Festival at the Ramsaysburg Homestead historic site in Knowlton Township, is the perfect spot to experience early frontier life while taking in the colorful fall foliage. There will be live bluegrass music, informal tours of the historic buildings, , a smokehouse bacon demonstration, corn husk dolls, refreshments and storytelling by the campfire. Follow A River!

The Higginsville Bridge spans the Raritan South Branch between Hunterdon and Somerset Counties.
Following a river's path is not an easy thing, since access is often blocked by private property or obscured by a maze of highways. But each river tells a story of the people who have lived, worked, played, or traveled along or between its banks. And each guarantees a stretch that will astonish and seduce with superb scenery, gentle pathways, and abundant wildlife. Harness your inner Columbus! Grab your GPS, your Canon, maybe hitch your Raleigh or Old Town to the car top, and chart your course!

The Wallkill River shares with great rivers like the Nile and the Rhine the peculiarity of NORTHWARD flow through Sussex County towards the Hudson in New York. It is the nine mile stretch of wetlands north of Hamburg that has given rise to the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge.
The Rockaway River, near Boonton.

The Rockaway winds through forty miles of wooded valleys, residential properties and major town centers from Sparta Mountain through the Berkshire Valley, Dover, Denville and the spectacular Boonton gorge. It meets the Whippany River in the Meadows of Parsippany and continues to the Passaic. The Black-Lamington roars through the hemlock groves of Hacklebarney State Park, heading for its eventual terminus at the Raritan.
The Raritan South Branch resembles an arm embracing northwest New Jersey as it runs southwest from Budd Lake through communities it has nourished for hundreds of years, valleys dripping with serenity, and wooded vistas perfumed with the fragrance of a mountain stream. The reservoirs at Spruce Run and Round Valley near Clinton mark the river's "elbow" as it turns to head southeast to the Piedmont, tranquilized, but no less beautiful as it approaches Raritan Bay.
Flanked by the river valleys of the Musconetcong, and Paulinskill, and bisected by the Pequest, Warren County offers a progression from rugged terrain to the north and west to the gentle farmland of the east and south as these magnificent tributaries flow toward the Delaware. If you've somehow missed floating the Delaware this summer, there's no better time than fall to explore the islands of the Delaware.
Where have all the pumpkins gone? Next weekend's Last Fling Pumpkin Sling has moved! Find out why here...
The latest political hocus pocus becomes the subject for discussion next Saturday (Oct. 18) when Capitol Steps puts the “MOCK” in Democracy at The Theatre at RVCC.
Things start to get scary with next weekend's Bones and Stone Graveyard Tour in Morristown.
