Native Dancers

The Sussex County Fairgrounds is host to many events other than the annual State Fair. This weekend (July 12 - 13), the Red Hawk Indian Arts Council returns with the Sussex County PowWow, the largest Native American Festival in New Jersey. Over 1,000 Native Americans from across the continent share their history, art, music, foods and traditions. There are also exhibits, educational programs, pony rides and craft vendors. 27 Plains Rd., Augusta (just north of Newton, near the intersection of Routes 206 and 15). Crafts in the Country

Wilbur's Country Store has been hosting craft fairs for 34 years. This weekend, July 12-13, around forty craftspeople and artists from four states will set up their wares in a real country setting, on the lawn behind Wilbur's barn-style complex. Crafts include jewelry, pottery, quilting, folk art, dolls, decorative signs and country wood items, silk and dried flower arrangements, stained glass creations, pillows, toys, children’s clothes, bird houses and much, much, more! Located at 735 Route 94 between Newton and Blairstown, Wilbur's is the perfect destination on a drive through the New Jersey countryside. Centenary Stage Company's Summer Jamfest gets a toe-tapping lift-off this Saturday (July 12, 8pm) with The New Gene Krupa Orchestra. Band leader, Michael Berkowitz, brings the legendary Krupa magic back to life for a whole new generation. Featuring original arrangements by Gene Krupa himself that were rescued and reconstructed by Berkowitz after a terrible fire destroyed much of the collection, this ensemble plays with an infectious energy that draws both listeners and dancers alike. How about some Blueberry Lemonade to cool you down? Race Farm has the prescription and the ingredients to fit. Pick-your-own opportunities have already begun at the Blairstown farm with blueberries and vegetables (no lemons). Reserve your spot at next Saturday's (July 19), Midsummer Herb Festival at Well-Sweep Herb Farm. This year's 25th Annual event celebrates Artemisia as the 2014 International Herb Association’s Herb of the Year. Artemisia has a long history, prominent in folklore, its virtues used in numerous ways: to protect and heal, create tasty beverages and foods, decorate the home and work its magical properties. Learn about them all while you enjoy a tasty luncheon prepared with this featured herb and several others. A lecture and tour through the garden will also be part of the day’s activities. Recognized as one of the premier herb farms in the United States, Well-Sweep Herb Farm also features a multitude of perennials, organic vegetables, display gardens, and a gift shop.
