Fading at the Water Gap.
Going, Going...
Gone? This weekend they
turn the clocks back and shorten the days up real quick.
Daylight
Craving Time! For sure, there
won’t be too many more days to get out and
feel a warm breeze while enjoying the amber and gold
colors of autumn’s last leaves. There are still
plenty of colorful
panoramas for leaf peepers, and much more listed
on our calendar for
this and coming autumn weekends.

Southern Exposure
More ridge than mountain, Sourland Mountain rises, at most, 500 feet skyward. But what it lacks in height it makes up for in length. The mountain-ridge runs from the Delaware River by Lambertville northeast to Hillsborough, tapping three counties on the way: Hunterdon, Mercer and Somerset. It rises through parts of Hopewell Borough and Township, Montgomery Township, East Amwell Township and West Amwell Township and traverses four major watersheds. It also provides an almost twenty-mile band of forest and a vast network of trails.

Part of the former the Kuser Estate on top of Bald Pate Mountain. Just a few miles south of Lambertville lies an area ripe for weekend adventure and exploration. At Bald Pate Mountain, components of local, national, and natural history are well represented, as well as brilliant prospects for craft seekers, hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders, and picnickers. To get there, head south from Lambertville on Route 29, enjoying glimpses of the Delaware & Raritan Canal feeder and the Delaware River along the way. |
Signs of the workings at Ford Mine remain around this pond in Jefferson, which, at the surface of a former shaft, reaches depths of several hundred feet.
MidlandsPresent or past, time in Jefferson Township is easy to enjoy. The northwest corner of Morris County includes Lake
Hopatcong, as well as numerous smaller lakes and ponds throughout, many a product of the Rockaway
River which rolls south out of Sussex County through the Berkshire Valley on the township's east side. You can get a feel for Jefferson and have a nice afternoon adventure on a loop more or less around Bowling Green Mt., starting in and up the Berkshire Valley to Petersburg, over the mountain through Milton and Jefferson (town), and back through the Weldon Brook Valley along Weldon Road towards Lake Hopatcong. Drive it! |
Sussex Loops
Get your aerobic fix with either of these two bike treks in Sussex and Orange County, NY. The
majesty of this land, so steeped in agrarian roots and pastoral splendor, is best enjoyed open to the elements and the temperaments of its topography.
Time, although it may not stand still, adjusts
to your pace. Minutes become hours, and around every
turn a new story emerges. |
