This Week in the NJ Skylands

June 16 - 23

Daddy's home, time for dinner! Photo by Dan Bacon.

Well, here it is. Only a few days til the livin' gets easy. Summertime! The fish will be jumping: bass, trout, musky, hybrid stripers, walleye, carp and the occasional wandering shad. The cotton won't be getting too high around here, but the corn will. Your daddy definitely does not have to be rich to enjoy all that Northwest New Jersey has to offer. And since Father's Day is this weekend, take him by the hand and show him!

minisink island
Minisink Island, viewed here from the north, lies between Milford and Dingman's Ferry. Water birds and eagles live along the narrow water, spiced with lots of little ripples.

Go Daddy, Go!

Islands of the Delaware are markers for the miles traversed on a float down the river, and for centuries of human history along its banks. By canoe, kayak, raft or tube, river trips are about perfect this time of year. The water is high, the flow is brisk, and the summer crowds have not yet arrived. If you really want to see the river, the annual Delaware Sojourn runs from June 18-25. Or click for money saving offers from the following!

Tomahawk Lake

On the Beach

You daddy doesn't have to be rich to enjoy a day at Tomahawk Lake in Sparta, where an immaculate sand bottom slopes gently out to floating rafts. Outside the swimming areas, you can enjoy rowboats, paddle boats, and new 4-lane racing slides. Back ashore you can visit a large refreshment stand, outdoor beer garden (with live weekend entertainment), an ice cream trailer, a novelty trailer, an arcade, an 18 hole miniature golf course, a putting green and a ball field. For information call the lake office at (973) 398-7777 or check their website.

Rock your Daddy!

Think your dad knows something about rock & roll? Take him to a museum and find out! That would be the Morris Museum and the Jersey Rocks exhibition. There's something for your dad, no matter what age he is, and something for you too! There are over 400 items from artists and fans that track New Jersey's contributions from early gospel, rhythm and blues and doo-wop artists, around the horn, to punk and disco. There's lots of Sixties and some Bruce in between. The exhibit is open Wednesday - Sunday and admission is $10; seniors, students and children 3 to 18, $7. The Morris Museum is located at 6 Normandy Heights Road in Morristown. (map); 973/971-3700

Dance with Dad!

Rich and varied, music in Northwest New Jersey is just the ticket for shows that end on high notes. Your musical destination is never very far away and often the price can't be beat, especially on summer evenings. The annual summer concert series at Shippen Manor in Oxford kicks off the season on Sunday, June 19, with Professor Louie & The Crowmatix. Your dad will jump for joy! So will you. The show is FREE, bought and paid for by your friends at the Warren County Cultural and Heritage Commission.

Music starts at 6pm, but, if you've never been there, go early and get a handle on what Shippen Manor is all about. 8 Belvidere Ave, Oxford (map); (908) 453-4381.
